Single Species Scheme
For 21 out of the 32 resident butterfly species in Ireland, a combination of information from the Irish Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and the Five Visit Monitoring Scheme allows us to accurately estimate changes in their populations over time. However, for 11 species they are either too rare to be consistently detected or the methods employed in our other monitoring schemes are inappropriate for their biology. Consequently, these species need bespoke monitoring schemes to be developed so their populations, and where possible their habitat quality, can be effectively monitored over time.
At present we have one scheme established for Marsh Fritillary, with another two in train for Large Heath and Brown Hairstreak.
