Intervarsity BioBlitz 2016
The Intervarsity BioBlitz 2016 takes place on Thursday 29th to Friday 30th Septebmer. This year, three universities will participate; Maynooth University, University College Cork and University College Dublin. Each campus has assembled a team of surveyors to document all the species they find within the campus over a 24 hour period. The campus that has recorded the most species by 17:00hrs on Friday 30th September will be declared Intervarsity BioBlitz champions for 2016. The Intervarsity BioBlitz is a collaborative project organised jointly by the National Biodiversity Data Centre and An Taisce, as part of the Green Campus initiative. All three participating campusus are part of the Green-Campus initiative, and contribute to the biodiversity element of the programme.
CONGRATULATIONS to UCD for winning Intervarsity BioBlitz 2016, with an incredible tally of 523 species over the 24 hour period. Maynooth University was second, with a fine tally of 385 species, and UCC totted up 233 species. This recording effort demonstrates the biodiversity value of each of the campuses and should help each of the campuses to plan for the protection and enhancement of biodiversity as part of the Green Campus Initiative. Well done to everyone who participated to make this such a wonderful event.
